Game #1 Saturday: Fort Hunt 10, West Springfield American 4
The 10-11s opened the D-9 Pool Play with an impressive win over the West Springfield American. The game was nip and tuck into the 3rd inning before Luke Belanger singled and scored on a pass ball. Gus Leyden held West Springfield in check as he pitched into the 3rd. The FH 9 broke it open in the 4th scoring 7 runs spurred by key hits from Campbell Mitchell and Michael Kroeger. Pavel Strain put the team on his shoulders throwing steady into the 5th when Jack Stapleton came out of the bullpen to snuff a rally. In all, the team played solid in the field and showed great discipline at the plate against the very capable pitching of West Springfield.
Game #2 Sunday: Fort Hunt 14, South County 4
FH banged out 11 hits, 4 of them for extra bases including Jamie Sara’s 3-run blast in the 2nd. Andy Maloney reached in all 4 of his plate appearances, two of them base hits, and scored 4 runs. Luke Belanger also added a pair of hits and scored 3 times. FH pitchers combined for 6 strikeouts and the defense was solid. One defensive sequence in particular stands out. With a South County runner at second base and no outs in the 2nd, FH left fielder Sammy Snider scooped up a ball that had glanced off shortstop Jamie Sara’s glove and threw a one-hop strike to catcher Maloney, who tagged out the South County runner at the plate and then fired to second baseman Luke Belanger to cut down the South County hitter and complete an unusual 7-2-4 double play. FH jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the 1st after Andy Maloney started the game with a single, moved up on a fielder’s choice and scored on a single by Michael Kroeger. Two batters later, Sammy Snider laced a double to right center, scoring Kroeger. FH kept up the offensive barrage in the 2nd as Campbell Mitchell walked, was safe at 2nd when the 2nd baseman dropped a relay throw and scored on a double by Luke Belanger. Andy Maloney also scored on Belanger’s shot. After Michael Kroeger reached on an error, the big blow of the inning came from Jamie Sara, who hit a towering fly that landed on top of the fence in right field and bounced out of the park for a three-run homer. After South County got on the board with a single tally in the 3rd, FH added 3 more runs in the bottom half, sparked by hits from Bradley Schaefer, Maloney, Luke Belanger and Zach Belanger - the latter belting a two-run single to the wall in right center. South County narrowed the score in the 4th, working several walks from FH pitcher Jamie Sara and a timely infield hit from their own pitcher to push across 3 runs. After Luke Belanger retired the leadoff hitter in the 5th and the next batter reached on an error, Sammy Snider came on to induce ground balls to third baseman Andy Maloney from the next two South County hitters he faced, ending the South County threat. In the home half, FH added 4 more runs on a leadoff double by Noah Lerner, and walks to five of the next batters. The game ended in the 5th on the 10-run rule.
