This year the Fort Hunt Little League will be expanding the T-Ball program to include 4 year olds (kids born prior to 4/30/07) along with 5 and 6 year olds. Children baseball age 6 may also play “A Ball” baseball rather than T-Ball if they have played at least one year of T-Ball, can hit a pitched ball (machine pitched slow) and can successfully catch/throw a ball at least half the time.
T-Ball is first and foremost about having fun, sportsmanship and learning to play as a team, but we are also building a foundation of baseball instruction. Our goal is to familiarize the kids with the basic rules and teach them the first set of baseball skills they will need. Registered players will be assigned teams in mid to late March and will be contacted by their coaches at that time with details about game and practice schedules, which each coach sets after consulting with parents on the best days/time possible for most people.
Teams will schedule their own practices and will play 8 scheduled games on weeknights starting at 6:30 pm, starting the week of April 11th (Opening Day festivities and pictures on the 9th, with possible practices that day also). Usually each team will practice once or twice per week, with one game per week also. Games will last through the 2nd week of June.
The games consist of 3 innings (every player bats each inning, there are no “outs”) and take about 1 hour to play. We play most of our games at the Waynewood Pool Club fields (and practice there also).
All parents are encouraged to volunteer in some manner, and specifically we will need at least a dozen volunteer managers and each team will need ideally 3 or 4 parent “assistant coaches” to ensure that practices and games run smoothly. For potential managers we provide a mandatory training clinic to impart useful coaching advice on March 8th. Please indicate during the registration process in the volunteering section if you are interested in managing, and you can also contact the T-Ball VP (Jasper Thomson) directly at jthomson@vsadc.com with any questions about managing or the league. The uniform is included, a shirt and cap. You provide baseball pants, socks, and cleats/sneakers.
