The Fort Hunt Youth Athletic Association announced the winners of the 2019 Jackson Casey Memorial Scholarships. The scholarships are in memory of Jackson Casey, a FHYAA athlete who died in 2011.

Jackson participated in lacrosse, basketball and football and was a good teammate and friend to so many fellow players. Jackson’s legacy, talent and sportsmanship will forever be remembered by those he touched.

The winners are:

MyKaila Hairston, attended South County High School and will be attending Hampton University in the fall 2019 where she will study Business Administration. She was involved in Fort Hunt Basketball as well as the Cheerleader Program.

Michael Hood, attended Mount Vernon High School and will be attending The United States Merchant Marine Academy. As a midshipmen he will be trained in marine engineering, navigation, maritime law, and many other tasks of running a large ship. Michael was a participant in the Fort Hunt Football and Lacrosse programs.

“Not only are these special young adults, but it was a joy reading about how sports and competition shaped their lives,” said Sean Casey, the father of Jackson Casey.

The two winners were selected from a pool of applicants, all of whom were asked to describe in 750-1,200 words the life lessons they learned through their participation in Fort Hunt youth athletics. Applicants were required to have participated in an FHYAA sport at some point in their career. Applicants came from eight area high schools and represent 23 colleges from coast to coast.

Fort Hunt Youth Athletic Association (FHYAA) was established in 1959 to serve the youth of Fort Hunt and the surrounding communities.  Our mission is to provide children up to 18 years of age the opportunity to experience recreational sports in an atmosphere that encourages and promotes teamwork, friendships and self-confidence, in a positive, safe and supportive environment.  We strive to teach proper sports fundamentals, strategies and good sportsmanship, which empowers our young athletes to become responsible citizens.

FHYAA is a nonprofit organization driven by volunteer members who serve in various capacities. We recognize that without our volunteers we could not function. We are thankful for and proud of the extensive network of community members that volunteer their time and effort to serve as coaches for our teams, Commissioners and Board Members for individual sports, as well as Board Members for FHYAA.

FHYAA currently supports Softball, Baseball, Lacrosse, Basketball, Rugby, Volleyball, Football, and Cheerleading.

The FHYAA Board of Directors is dedicated to improving our sports programs and expanding the opportunities we provide for the children in our community.
