Sportsmanship
...almost as important as safety

Sportsmanship is a crucial, essential aspect of the Fort Hunt Rugby program, for both touch and tackle.

We will socialize with our opponents prior to the match.  We might even warm up with them, especially for touch matches.

During the match we will play our opponents hard and fair, with no quarter, and we will play as hard as we can to win, with no compromises.  We will tackle our opponents hard, with drive and controlled agression; we want them to think twice about carrying the ball into our defense.  But, we will not cut corners, and we will not cheat.

We will play hard and in-control, both physically and emotionally.  An enraged player is of no use whatsoever to his team.  A player who gives in to retaliation and unsportsmanlike conduct is fundamentally acting from a position of selfishness, and is not focusing on what is best for the team, and deserves the yellow/red card he/she receives, and the Fort Hunt Rugby and league suspension that likely will follow.

We will compliment our teammates on positive play during training and in matches.

We will not denigrate or criticize the mistakes of our teammates, in training or especially in matches.

We will not argue in front of opponents; this helps their game and weakens ours.

We will not taunt opponents or gloat in their mistakes.

We will compliment our opponents on their positive play.

We will let our on-field accomplishments speak for themselves, and will refrain from gratuitous on-field celebration.

After the match, we will socialize once again with our opponents over food and drink, because they are our rugby mates, and always will be.  We will see them again, and we want a positive relationship.
