Fort Hunt Coaching
...resources for our coaching leaders

Fort Hunt Rugby Coaching

Above all: Thank you, coaches, for volunteering your time, energy, and experience to make this youth rugby program what it is.  We would have nothing if it weren't for you.

Our #1 obligation to players: their safety.  There is never a compromise when it comes to player safety, whether that be a weather call, or not allowing a possibly injured player to continue play.

All Fort Hunt Rugby coaches are Positive Coaching Alliance Double-Goal coaches.  Ours is a lifetime sport, and in keeping with that view, we emphasize life lessons.  We do not emphasize winning above all else (although winning is a lot more fun than losing).

All Fort Hunt Rugby tackle coaches are USA Rugby-certified to a minimum of Level 1/Introducing Rugby.

This is the area for our coaches to find and recommend resources.

See the links at left to find specific answers to questions, and other resources.

Youth Coaches for Summer Recreational Rugby

We would like experienced high school-age players to volunteer to be youth coaches for our summer touch teams (9-and-under and 11-and-under).

The benefits of this are:

  • Teenage player-coaches gaining experience in leadership roles
  • Youth player-coaches serving as mentors to upcoming young rugby players
  • Youth player-coaches becoming better as individual players through formal coaching training and increased familiarity with the game
  • Youth player-coaches giving back to their club
  • Adult coaches and Fort Hunt Rugby leaders providing detailed letters of recommendation for college applications

If you are or next fall will be a sophomore, junior or senior, contact any adult coach for more information on how you can get involved.

  • Youth player-coaches must take the IRB Rugby Ready and PCA Double-Goal Coach online training courses (details at left).
  • Youth player-coaches do not have to register to play in the summer season to take part in this program, but may both coach and play if they choose.  If not playing in the summer program, they still must register with FHYAA as a rugby volunteer coach.

Youth player-coaches will not coach tackle rugby; this program is for coaching 9-U and 11-U touch rugby only.
