Registration for Spring 2012 high school rugby is open!

Go to the site splash page for all links and info for high school rugby registration.

Click here for our Spring 2012 high school rugby fact sheet and full details of the program, eligibility, requirements, etc.

Click here for the orientation meeting slide presentation.

The registration cost is $140.00.  There is a $5.50 county usage fee, for a total of $145.50 for each registration.

Late fee, which begins after 1 March, is $25, for a total of $170.50 to register.

We expect all parents to volunteer to ensure the success of each team.  Volunteer positions are: Assistant Coach, Assistant Referee (sideline judge), field preparation, social activities, and fundraising.  If you choose not to volunteer, you may opt out for $50.00.

Scholarships are available for all players.  Ask a coach for instructions, or send an email to the club leadership.

All players must register with USA Rugby as a player.  Go to www.usarugby.org and then Membership/Become a Member.  Register under invidivual high school registration, which is $30.00 ($20 for USA Rugby, and $10 for Rugby Virginia) for "Fort Hunt Youth Athletic Association Rugby Club."  This registration also will be valid for the Summer 2012 season, if you choose to play.  This registration is a requirement to play high school rugby, so please make a copy of your paperwork and turn it in to a coach.

Meetings

We will hold a mandatory high school rugby meeting on 18 January 2012 at 7:00pm at Sherwood Regional Library.  See the details on the team calendar on the front page.  We will hold an orientation for all new players and parents, and will conduct paperwork/compliance verification for all players.

Congratulations!

GEAR!

Kit Bags

We ordered custom Fort Hunt Rugby kit bags for players in 2011, and may do it again in 2012, depending on interest.  Minimum for an order will be 30 kit bags.

The bags are made by International Athletic of Ferndale, WA, the same company that made the red/white/blue canvas kit bag that Coach Dacey has been using nonstop since 1987.  Here are the details:

For the high school boys, we will have a bag that has a blue/black body (to match the playing uniform, see below).  This color scheme also will basically match the middle scool rugby color scheme for the Fort Hunt/Alexandria team, although the bags will not be customized for "Fort Hunt/Alexandria."  The Fort Hunt Rugby patch will go on each end.  There will be a white stripe on each side.  One side will have "Fort Hunt Rugby" on it, and the other side will have a custom name; both sides will be done in red lettering.

For the high school girls, and for all summer recreational players (and boys HS players who want one), we will order a bag that has a green/gold body (to match the girls’ playing uniforms, see below).  All other details of this bag are the same as above.

(Just to be clear, anyone can order either color, boys/girls, summer players, moms/dads, whatever/whoever.)

All bags will be size XL, which is 13"x34".  All bags will have an inside zippered pocket.

If you’d like to take a look, see the kit bag area at International Athletic at http://www.iarugby.com/rugby-team-sales.php?page=14

The cost for each bag last year was $85.  This likely will be the cost for 2012 bags.  This may seem expensive, but these are big, top-notch, heavy canvas bags with custom artwork, which will last for years to come--Coach Dacey’s bag is proof of that.

Custom Shorts and Socks

We have a few custom Fort Hunt Rugby shorts from last year.  Most of them are in smaller sizes.  These shorts are an optional purchase; players still must have black rugby shorts for matches.

For 2012 we will be ordering for the boys black/blue socks, and the girls will get green/gold.

Here’s an article from the West Potomac HS Wire, from 15 December 2010.  There are a number of factual errors, so we have to wonder who Ms. Palo talked to for her information, but nonetheless it’s great that we’re getting some exposure:

The Basics
...getting started

You’ve got enthusiastic, highly experienced, and fully qualified coaches (Dacey, Roach, Vonada, Bowman, Golding, and more) ready to go, now all you have to do is register, kit up, show up, and bring your friends along.

The Fort Hunt Rugby U-19/high school program will not be a recreational program, not a simple extracurricular, but will be a full-season spring sport, and as such will compete directly with all other spring sports, like soccer, baseball and lacrosse.  Players may participate in other sports other than rugby, but must understand that club policy will be that only players who attend training, those who dedicate themselves to their club and their teammates, will start and play for the A side.  You can play another spring sport, and show up for rugby games and play B or C side--no problem at all, but you won’t make the starting 22 until you dedicate yourself to the team, to the program, and to your teammates.

Basic Facts of the Fort Hunt U-19/High School Program
(as of 27 January 2011)

Rugby has been a youth sport in the Fort Hunt/Mount Vernon community through the Fort Hunt Youth Athletic Association (FHYAA) since 2006

Fort Hunt Rugby runs two programs:
U-19/High school rugby for girls and boys 14-18
Summer recreational youth touch and tackle rugby (7-17), with 93 players in Summer 2010, 120 expected in Summer 2011

No experience necessary; we will teach you how to play rugby
Ages: 14-18 (U-19); 8th graders who turn 14 in 2011 are eligible (we strongly recommend 8th grade boys play in Rugby Virginia's new middle school league)
Open to any eligible player, from any school
This is not a school- or FCPS-affiliated program; this is an FHYAA/Rugby progrm

Registration is open now
Training starts on 22 February
